Course Details

This two-week course is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of this fundamental welding technique. Each class is limited to 10 students to ensure every participant receives essential hands-on guidance.

20% of our courses are theory-based and the remaining 80% is hands-on practical experience. After completing each course, students will have the opportunity to participate in CWB testing and receive their tickets.

CWB is the “Canadian Welding Bureau”, now also known as CWB Certification. The Canadian Welding Bureau is recognized as one of the biggest and most innovative welding organizations in the world.

They administer welding standards, embedded within the national building code, in Canada.

It is mandatory for all companies to be CWB certified within the Structural and erecting industry, however, many non-structural companies voluntarily choose to be certified because of the CWB’s credentials being recognized nationally.

Course Description:

  • Introduction to Stick Welding: The course starts with an overview of the SMAW process, equipment, and safety precautions necessary for stick welding. Students learn about the different types of electrodes and their applications.
  • Understanding Electrodes and Equipment: In this module, students will learn to identify and choose the appropriate electrode for different metals and positions based on the American Welding Society (AWS) electrode classification system. This includes understanding the welding machine, its parts, and how to properly maintain and troubleshoot it.
  • Welding Techniques and Practices: Students will gain practical skills by practicing various welding techniques, including flat, horizontal, welding. They’ll learn about joint preparation, electrode manipulation, and controlling the arc and travel speed.
  • Safety Practices: Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on following proper safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining a safe workspace, and understanding the hazards of welding and how to prevent them.

Notes:

  • Participants will need to bring their own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Welding Machines, consumables, and test materials will be provided by the academy.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Introduction

  • Duration: 55 hours (2 weeks)
  • Classes run from Monday to Friday, 9am-2:30pm

The learning outcome for the theory portion of the SMAW intro course includes safety, defining the fundamentals of SMAW process, describing the equipment requirements, describe the construction & characteristics of electrodes, and describing the SMAW procedure variables & their effect on quality.

The practical portion of the course will include beads on a plate, stop & starts, padding, weaves, fillet welds (¼”, 3/8”, ½”), groove welds (T & S classification), basic fitting, 1F, 2F, 1G.

The first step to becoming a welder and getting certified. This course is designed for individuals who want to start learning how to weld.Stick welding, also known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld.

It is one of the most widely used welding processes and is known for its simplicity and versatility.
