ASL (American Sign Language) is the native language and culture of a large proportion of deaf people, and is an expressive language based on conceptual signs and a unique sentence structure.
It is a visual language that does not translate word-for-word into the English language. Basic everyday communication using conversationally relevant signs and grammar principles will be studied using the D.E.M. (Direct Experience Method), and will include topics such as: fingerspelling, ASL terminology, expressive and receptive vocabulary, basic sentence structure, spatial locations, parameters, and an examination of the history of sign language as well as issues in Deaf culture.
This course will be conducted entirely in ASL. Speaking with one's voice is not permitted in the classroom.

This introductory course in American Sign Language (ASL) teaches students to manage everyday communication in ASL and integrate deaf culture and deaf community content.
Learn new vocabulary with an emphasis placed on increasing Sign Language fluency in both the receptive and expressive modes of communication.
In our ASL classes, workshops ,and 1 on 1 sessions we use the Signing Naturally curriculum that was originally developed at a California College.Â
American Sign Language is designed to introduce a visual-gestural language used by the Deaf Community in Canada and the United States.
