Software testing can be divided into two broad categories which are Manual Software testing and Automated Software testing both of them having advantages and disadvantages.
Manual Software Testing:
In the method of manual testing, the software test Engineer behaves like an end user, checking all possible software deeds that may occur during customary software use before software release and investigate for software bugs, broken links, security vulnerabilities, search engine incompatibilities.
Manual testing and automated testing have equal importance in testing methodologies, a manual testing is conducted prior to automated testing because we can't ensure 100 percentage correctness in automated tests.
If there is any difference in actual software behaviour from expected behaviour that may be reported as an error, a perfect script is created before manual testing starts this is to ensure that all sessions or stages of software is covered under testing.
Automated Software Testing:
Compared with manual testing methodologies automated software testing is not sufficient to find out all errors and bugs in the software so it is preferred for secondary test, but an automated test needs less testing time when compared to manual testing.
The automated Software testing procedure is based on several tools, these tools are very useful to the test Engineer while doing repetitive testing tasks. QTP Selenium, Watir, Windmill, Sahi, Tellurium are commonly used testing tools.
Importance of automated testing is increasing now a days due to its simplicity, time saving ability, consistency and reusability even though manual testing is preferred by most software providers since automated testing tools require high initial cost.
