Overview
Solar technologies use photovoltaic (PV) panels or mirrors to concentrate solar radiation to convert sunlight into electrical energy. This energy can be converted into electricity or stored in batteries or thermal storage.
Solar radiation is light emitted by the sun, also known as electromagnetic radiation. Although every location on Earth receives some sunlight during the year, the amount of solar radiation that reaches any given location on Earth`s surface varies. Solar technology captures this radiation and converts it into usable energy.
Photovoltaics (PV) and concentrated solar-thermal power (CSP) are the two main types of solar energy technologies.
PV stands for photovoltaics and is used in solar panels. When the sun shines on a solar panel, the energy is absorbed by the panel`s PV cells. This energy creates electrical charges that move in response to the cell`s internal electric field, causing current to flow.
CSP systems use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto receivers, which collect solar energy and convert it into heat, which can then be used to generate electricity or be stored for later use.
Solar energy technology does not end with the generation of electricity by PV or CSP systems.
These solar energy systems must be integrated into homes, businesses, and existing electrical grids using a variety of traditional and renewable energy sources.
