Check out the entry requirements to determine which stage is most appropriate for you. Some languages are available across levels in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Spanish stage 1
The course is suitable for real beginner learners of Spanish with virtually no prior knowledge of the language. Typically, during the course, you’ll learn how to talk about basic personal details, and your work or studies. You’ll also learn how to talk about daily routines, and holidays.
At the end of the course, you’ll have some elementary appreciation of Spanish grammar and structures and you’ll be able to give basic information about yourself and ask for directions. You’ll also be able to communicate at a basic level when shopping and when you’re in restaurants and in hotels.
Spanish stage 2
The course is suitable for beginner learners of Spanish with some knowledge of the language, equivalent to stage 1 (for example GCSE grade B or C). Typically, during the course, you’ll learn about life in Spain, the world of work, and how to talk about yourself and events, in the past and in the future.
At the end of the course, you’ll have deepened your appreciation of Spanish grammar and structures at an elementary level and you’ll be able to make comparisons, and talk about recent events.
Spanish stage 3
Spanish stage 3 is the right stage for you if you’ve successfully completed Spanish stage 2 or equivalent (e.g. GCSE grade A). Typically, during the course, you’ll study topics relating to life in Spain, such as: social media, lifestyle, education, the environment and substance abuse.
You’ll revise and practise some aspects seen in Stage 2, before you are introduced to more advanced tenses and grammar. At the end of the course, you should be able to apply the new structures acquired during the course, in writing and in simple discussions.
Spanish stage 4
Spanish stage 4 is the right stage for you if you have successfully completed Spanish stage 3 or equivalent (e.g. A level grade D or E). Typically, during the course you’ll study topics relating, for example, to entertainment, new technologies or social issues in Spain. At the end of the course, you’ll be able to talk about your intentions and wishes, predictions and suggestions.
Spanish stage 5
Spanish stage 5 is the right stage for you if you’ve successfully completed Spanish stage 4 or equivalent (e.g. A level grade A, B, or C). Topic areas typically include the news and Spanish cultural and social issues. At the end of the course, you’ll be able, for example, to summarise extended written and spoken texts, as well as discuss complex ideas.
Spanish stage 6
Spanish stage 6 is the right stage for you if you’ve successfully completed Spanish stage 5 or equivalent (e.g. an A level Spanish plus at least one further year of study or equivalent).
All materials are developed by the module leader. They are based on current affairs and there are always opportunities to study themes and topics related to your own areas of interest.
You will work on different language and academic skills which range from summarising an article to participating in an oral debate at the end of the year.
Spanish stage 7
Spanish stage 7 is the right stage for you if you’ve successfully completed Spanish stage 6 or equivalent (e.g. an A level Spanish plus at least two further years of study or in-country experience of the language or equivalent).
