Castellano or Castilian Spanish is the official language of Spain. It was brought to the Americas by the Spanish conquistadores after the discovery of America by Cristobal Colon – we know him as
Christopher Columbus!! We are eternally grateful to him as chocolate was the preferred drink of the Aztecs and made popular in Europe by the Spanish.
Spanish is a world language and like English it has regional variations in accent and idiom, however, the written language is universal. The major difference between Castellano and South American Spanish is that in Spain c’ s and z’ s are pronounced with a lisp like the English “th” but in Latin America they are pronounced as s’s!!
Spanish brings to mind the Flamenco of southern Spain, the dulcet tones of the classic guitar, the Moorish palace of the Alhambra in Granada and the tantalizing flavors of paella.
The Spanish custom to go out for tapas – delicious morsels of all types of Spanish delicacies such as marinated octopus, chorizo and jamon, washed down with sangria, has become popular evidenced by the opening of many tapas bars even here in Australia.
Like Italian, it is quite easy to learn as it is also based on Latin. It has a wonderful sound and if you travel in Spanish-speaking countries the effort you make to learn the language is very much appreciated and will make traveling more interesting as you can talk to the locals.
Anna De Peron started Anna’s Languages in 2003 in Coolum Beach, with a small Italian Beginners class of four students. Over the past thirteen years it has expanded into a small, independent language centre which now offers Italian, Spanish, and French, with Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Classes are held at the Coolum Community Centre, Peregian Beach Community House and the Noosa Leisure Centre. The classes have small groups with a maximum of 7 students per class. Private and semi- private classes are also offered. Day and evening classes are available.
Since its beginning, Anna’s Languages has been committed to providing a standard of excellence for adult students. Italian, Spanish, French courses are suitable for people who want to travel, for personal interest and self development, or simply for those not so young wanting to keep an active mind and meet like minded people!!!
The focus of the Beginners courses is practical conversation which involves a high level of interactive student participation. Grammar is kept at an absolute minimum. The course covers basic situational dialogue such as giving personal information, ordering food and drink, making reservations and asking directions. Students will be speaking their language of choice from day one!!
Intermediate and Advanced levels, for those students who want to seriously study a language, offer a more involved, structured study with greater Grammar content, vocabulary expansion and scaffolded conversation practice. These courses also have a literary component – contemporary and classical works are studied.
The teachers on the language programmes are all qualified, registered, experienced in adult education and have native or near-native proficiency and above all – love what they do!!
Improve your knowledge of the Spanish language. As a tutor - 'I make it easy'. The final objective is that participants should be able to express their ideas fluently in their own manner. It is never enough simply to 'know' something; you must be able to 'do' things with what you know.
As a general teaching approach, we focus on your communications skills rather than grammar and other more technical aspects of the Spanish language. That way you won’t just learn more efficiently, but you will find the classes to be more interactive and enjoyable.
This short course is for people who want to learn Spanish for the first time. You will master the basics in a fun and friendly environment. There is no additional charge for course materials.
Upon completion of a proficiency level, students can choose to sit an official DELE exam in Brisbane and obtain an internationally recognised proficiency rating.
