NSW School of Languages offers our Year 9 and 10 Spanish students an engaging learning experience with effective and innovative learning activities. Students will require access to a computer and the internet during their allocated Spanish periods as much of their work is to be completed online.
NSW School of Languages offers our Year 9 and 10 Spanish students an engaging learning experience with effective and innovative learning activities.
Students will require access to a computer and the internet during their allocated Spanish periods as much of their work is to be completed online.
Students will work through learning activities on our eLearning site and are encouraged to further their learning through engagement with Spanish-speaking communities and Spanish-language media.
Students schedule regular telephone or video-call lessons to practise their interaction and speaking skills with our experienced and highly skilled Spanish teachers.
Students are also encouraged to interact in Spanish with their peers where possible and are invited to attend our school in Petersham for a face-to-face lesson and participate in online lessons every term.
Students may begin their Spanish learning journey with us in Year 9 or Year 10. Students who successfully complete their studies in Year 9 and Year 10 may proceed to the Spanish Continuers course in Year 11.
If students have no prior knowledge of Spanish and begin Spanish studies with us in Year 10, they may still be eligible to commence the Spanish Beginners course in Year 11.
Spanish Beginners
The Stage 6 Spanish Beginners course is a course written and produced by NSW School of Languages and Southern Cross School, Ballina. This course caters for students with little or no prior Spanish study.
It has guided new learners of Spanish to achieve excellent results and learning outcomes.
Weekly speaking lessons allow students to practise the speaking skills component of the course interactively, and also allow for immediate and targeted support of students in their learning.
Students are encouraged to attend NSW School of Languages in Petersham once per term for face-to-face lessons and participate in online lessons with their teachers and peers.
Spanish Continuers
The Spanish Continuers course was originally produced by the Learning Materials Production Centre and it consists of 5 Modules, each module containing 4 units of work.
In Year 11 and 4 modules containing 4 units of work each in Year 12 complemented with additional materials to help students according to their needs and to prepare them for their HSC with examination techniques.
The course is very comprehensive and aims to develop all four-skill areas. Speaking lessons are organised on a weekly basis with the aim of developing the students' conversational skills.
Students are encouraged to attend NSW School of Languages in Petersham once per term for face-to-face lessons and participate in online lessons with their teachers and peers.
Spanish Extension
The current Spanish Extension course is a course created by the NSW School of Languages.
The course is presented by a background information package consisting of learning modules and every week students need to complete a series of activities related to the prescribed film También la Lluvia (Evan the Rain).
The prescribed issues. The original activities are supported by additional materials and in-depth study and analysis related to the prescribed text's themes and issues.

Student learning is supported through a diverse program of online learning materials, speaking lessons, video conferencing, online forums, email and study days at our school where students enjoy the opportunity to meet with other students and staff.
The use of the telephone and video conferencing ensure that students have close connections with their teachers, despite the fact that they are not in the same physical space. Our students are drawn from over 460 schools across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and other rural regions across New South Wales.
The school also offers Stage 6 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) to students in regional government secondary schools. In the 2020 Higher School Certificate (HSC), 69% of our students achieved results above the state mean and NSW School of Languages students achieved First in State in 11 courses. Fifty-five students were placed in High Achievers List, earning marks placing them in top 5 in the state.
Of the 820 HSC students, 65% of students achieved a mark in the top two bands. Of the students studying an Extension course, 96% of students achieved in the top 2 bands.
The school has written new courses in Canvas for Year 9, 10, Year 11 and 12 Beginners and Extension students. These courses represent the latest pedagogy in online learning. Teachers will continue participating in professional learning on language pedagogy, assessment, and working with students with special needs.
Teachers at NSW School of Languages are experts in their language. More than half of the staff assist the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to mark the HSC each year with a significant number involved in the setting or assessment of the examinations.

This course is for anyone starting from scratch or who has a minimum knowledge but would like to start from zero to make sure to learn all the fundamentals.
This course is a continuation from Spanish Beginners 2 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with approximately 40 hours of Spanish required.

Our language classes are run in a relaxed and informal manner by friendly native-speaking instructors who will teach you the practical skills of the language combined with a basic knowledge of grammar and a glimpse into the culture and customs of their country.
Spanish is on par with English the most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin. It has become the second language in the United States. It is spoken in all of the South American countries with the exception of Brazil where Portuguese is spoken and that is linguistically very close.
