About the course:
Tai Chi is in fact a martial art that originated in China over one thousand years ago and was originally used for self-defence. (Many people, upon seeing the relaxed, smooth and flowing movements of Tai Chi for the first time cannot believe that they have anything to do with a martial art.)
Our goal is to create an environment where Tai Chi is employed to cultivate not only health and longevity, but also virtue, charity of heart and receptivity in an atmosphere of serenity – the culmination of which is the mountain-top of full consciousness.
Until recently the studio was known as The Jade Mountain School of Tai Chi, as named by its founder Greg McCord, who now lives in Scotland.
We are now called CenterPoint Tai Chi (or the CenterPoint Tai Chi Studio),
To us, the phrase CenterPoint explains clearly what Tai Chi is all about. Yin and Yang means balance (it can be physical balance and/or mental balance). When we have balance we are centered (physically and/or mentally). Physically – Tai Chi helps with finding and keeping your body’s center point and almost all the movements are therefore around the body’s center point and/or centre line. Mentally – Tai Chi helps with concentration and focus and when our concentration/mental focus is high (when we are in the “Zone”) we are mentally centered.
The Kushido School of Martial Arts is one of the oldest schools of Martial Arts in South Africa that can develop anyone that has no knowledge of Self-defence into being able to defend themselves effectively against many different types of armed and unarmed attacks.
Both Tai Chi Quan and Qigong is known as preventative therapy exercise. Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness.
Classes consist of individual and partner exercises that will gently develop your strength, suppleness and gracefulness while at the same time, focusing your mind, making you more calm and present.
Tai Chi is an accurate reflection of the natural order of things. As we draw current into the body, value is seen as it moves through the body. Previously its value had been in potential only. E.g. Hoarding money. It has no value if one dies.
Arnold Erasmus started Lao Kung in 2002 mainly as a Tui-Na practice. In 2006 the emphasis of the practice shifted to specialisation in acupuncture and moxibustion treatments as well as Tai Chi and Chi Kung instruction.
