Joanne Grace School of Dance tap students progress through early training in flexibility of ankle & knee joints, gross motor skills & hand-eye co-ordination to advanced levels of musicality, timing differentiation & improvisation through the Glenn Wood syllabus
Tap dance is a form of dance characterised by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates that are attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer’s shoe.
These metal plates, when tapped against a hard surface, create a percussive sound and as such the dancers are considered to be musicians.

A technical tap class with a seriously modern edge of funky percussive beats and rhythms. If you love Happy Feet, Tap Dogs, Hot Shoe Shuffle, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly you will love this class!
Internationally recognised ISTD syllabus is taught. Trains the students in flexibility, strength, rhythm, musicality, and, combined with ballet, gives the required training for entry into Tertiary Dance institutions.
Some of our students started tap dancing as young as 70 years old, and have reaped the rewards improving balance, memory, fitness and as they put it “groove”. It’s never too late to start tap dancing.
In our tap classes we teach classic tap technique seen in musicals like 42nd street and Singing in the rain as well as more current, funky styles such as Tap Dogs.
We believe it is important for every student to take part in Tap classes if they do not learn a musical instrument. It emphasises the development and strengthening importance of rhythm and sound.
