Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities.

The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.

Promoting self-belief, social inclusion and a high self-esteem play an integral part to pupils’ well-being; ensuring pupils thrive in a positive, nurturing, safe environment.

It is an active role supporting the learner to access the curriculum. They are good role models, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings; contribute to planning and class activities.

Promoting Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and positive behaviours are crucial in contributing to improved pupil progress and development.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of maths and English GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent or the ability to achieve a Level 2 functional skill.

Work Experience

  • The apprenticeship is work experience based, so this will depend on the employment contract you agree to.

  • You will study a wide range of modules, including units based around the following areas:

  • Understanding how pupils learn and develop

Technology

Working with teachers to understand and support assessment for learning

  • Curriculum

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education

  • Developing strategies for support

  • Communication and team work

  • Working with teachers to accurately assess

  • Problem solving/ability to motivate pupils

  • Building relationships/ embracing change

  • Adding value to education

  • Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion

  • Professional standards and personal accountability

  • Team working, collaboration/ engagement

Assessment

You’ll be assessed by:

  • A professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of work

  • A practical observation with Q&A

  • N.B. 20% of the training must be off the job training – details of the elements included in the 20% off the job training are available on request.

Career and Progression

Once you’ve completed this apprenticeship, you can go on to further training, including:

  • Assessor Coach Level 4 Apprenticeship

  • Teacher Level 6 Apprenticeship

  • Academic Professional Level 7 Apprenticeship

  • On completion to this can lead onto the following roles:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant

  • Assistant Teacher

  • Teacher
