The TESOL certificate program is a for-credit post-baccalaureate program made up of 8 half-credits and was first offered through Woodsworth College in 1972.

The Woodsworth College TESOL certificate is in the process of being permanently phased out.  We are not accepting any new application for TESOL.

Alternate Certificate Program for Students

As the U of T TESOL certificate is being phased out, alternative certificates programs are available to students.

If you are looking for options to complete an accredited TESOL certification, we suggest you consult the list of accredited programs on the TESL Ontario website.

These programs have the same level of accreditation as U of T’s program and allows you to be certified by TESL Ontario and TESL Canada.

If you are looking for a TEFL program (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), geared towards teaching abroad, you may be interested in the program run by Teachaway and OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education).

Please note this program is not accredited by TESL Ontario or TESL Canada and therefore does not qualify you to teach ESL in Ontario.

For student who have taken U of T TESOL courses in the past and who wish to continue your studies at another institution, please consult with them regarding the process for having your U of T TESOL courses applied as transfer credits to your new program. The U of T course taken as part of the TESOL certificate appears on your U of T transcript.
