The life of an English teacher can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Our teachers are day in and day out captured by the smiles and success of their students. Teaching English is a career move that can open doors you never knew existed.

The purpose of the TESL Canada certification is to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) across Canada by promoting professional certification standards that are recognized in all provinces.

The TESL Canada National Professional Certification Standards benefit educators by helping ensure that:

  • TESL training and ESL teaching experience are recognized as the main professional benchmarks of Canadian ESL educators.
  • Teaching credentials are recognized not only from province to province but by virtue of their national status from country to country.
  • Credentials are recognized by international students when they compare faculty at post-secondary schools and in language institutes across Canada before their arrival in Canada. As a result, programs that hire qualified professionals will attract more students.

Course Methodology

Format

The course is offered in two formats:

  • On-Campus: The material is presented in a traditional in-class setting with interaction between the teacher and students. ESL is a highly dynamic field and communication is a key aspect.
  • Online: The material will be presented in the form of downloadable resources, online discussions, online group work, peer teaching practice, and reading assignments.
  • Upon graduation, a student teacher who passes the course will receive the inlingua TESL certification and be eligible to apply for a TESL Canada standard 1 certificate.

Homework

Depending on the student, there will be around 2 hours of homework that needs to be done every day. The homework includes readings, planning, completing case studies, lesson plans, and written assignments.

Online: Inlingua Victoria will provide a TESL tutor to help you along your journey. You may schedule an appointment every week with the TESL tutor for up to 1 hour. Your TESL tutor will watch your practice lessons, give feedback, conduct tutorials, and answer questions about the content or course. Most students find that one 30-minute session is adequate for them. You may also talk to our TESL tutor outside of your scheduled appointment on our online chat board.

Delivery

On-Campus: Students are marked on their in-class participation, homework completion, and test scores.

Online: The material will be presented in the form of downloadable resources, online discussions, online group work, peer teaching practice, and reading assignments.

Practicum

There are two parts to the practicum. The first part is the classroom observations. After several weeks, student teachers will be given the opportunity to observe live inlingua Victoria classes.

Students may choose to watch the classes online, or come to the school and watch them in person. With each course that you watch, you must also submit an observation log. In total, each student is accountable for observing 10 hours of classes.

The second part of the practicum is in-class teaching. During this period of time, student teachers are assigned a sponsor or mentor teacher who will guide them and give feedback about the lessons that they conduct in their class. This part of the practicum is the most important and rewarding part of the whole course.
