Course Details

The Thai Language courses are designed and structured for the busy working professional who aspires to attain language mastery in the Thai Language. Competencies achieved through attending the progressive courses are useful to building confidence so as to enable the individual to speak, understand and read basic syntax in the newly-acquired language focus.

Courses are designed in a structured and coherent manner, positioned from an adult perspective so that they closely address and match the adults’ learner’s quest for continuing education. By the end of the course, students will have acquired basic communicative competencies useful in selected everyday situations and personal interactions, as well as vital strategies for language learning and language use.

Through the course, students will acquire basic linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge of the Thai language. Students will learn to acquire basic grammar and vocabulary to perform authentic communicative tasks in everyday situations.

They will be able to comprehend short listening texts, as well as express themselves in a variety of topical situations in daily life as well as during personal interactions. They will also gain an understanding of the target language society and observe how the language is used in the Thai context.

They will acquire language learning and communication strategies that will support their language learning and language use. A certificate of proficiency is awarded to participants who successfully complete Thai 3. This course is designed to teach students the basics of Thai language which include basic grammatical concepts, text reading and conversation skills.

 

Course Content:

Students will be engaging in pedagogical tasks to achieve the following communicative functions:

  • greetings and leave-taking expressions
  • asking for and giving directions
  • describing people, places and things
  • expressing likes, dislikes, preferences
  • making comparisons
  • making requests
  • offering helps
  • asking for and giving clarification
  • giving reasons

 

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Communicate in Thai applying the basic structures, expressions and vocabulary learned throughout the course to the selected and daily life contexts.
  • Read and write simple words using the basic Thai writing system (tones by default) learned in class.

  • Ms Suwanna Chuanromanee is originally from Bangkok, Thailand, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree from Thammasat University, Thailand. Suwanna went on to pursue her Master of Arts in Communication degree at the Wichita State University, U.S.A. She was amongst the cohort of pioneering Thai language part-time tutors at the Centre for Language Studies, National University of Singapore. Today, the well-established Thai language program is recognized as one of the largest Thai as a foreign language programs in Asia. She had taught at the NUS from 1999 to 2011. She was also a Thai language part-time tutor at the Centre for Modern Languages, Nanyang Technological University from 2011 to 2013. With a rich and varied experience in teaching the Thai language to non-native speakers, Suwanna currently conducts customized independent private lessons at various levels. She enjoys teaching students of all ages from children, adults to elderly. During her services at the NUS, Suwanna was actively involved in conceptualizing, creating and executing various activities and teaching components as accompaniments to courses under her care. She initiated and co-produced the first “Speaking Exercise Book for Thai Module 2”. She spearheaded the program’s inaugural Thai cultural workshop. She was a facilitator for a few Thai Language program’s events such as “Thai Night – A Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the NUS Thai Language Program”. She is passionate in designing supplementary materials used for speaking and writing Thai language at both universities. She also co-reviewed a textbook, “Thai Reader Volume 1”, published on the “Electronic Journal of Foreign Language Teaching” 2010, Vol.7, No. 1, Centre for Language Studies, National University of Singapore (http://e-flt.nus.edu.sg/main.htm).
