The Spanish Language

Spanish is spoken widely as a native language in Spain, most countries of Central and South America, and over 45 million people in the USA (13% of the population) speak Spanish as their mother tongue. In the USA, Spanish is the most widely taught language in the country after English.

 The Hispanic (Spanish-speaking) community in the USA is sizeable, and most businesses target the Hispanics as a separate segment, with Spanish used as the language for communication with that community.

Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and it is also one of the official languages of the European Union and the Organization of American States. In the USA, Spanish is the most widely taught language in the country after English.

In recent years, there has been a significant spurt in investments in India by Spanish companies, with companies like Navantia, Dragados, Gamesa, Grupo Roca and Mapfre having entered the Indian market.

The recent boost in bilateral trade with Latin America (USD 42 billion in 2013) because of the economic resurgence of both regions has given a further fillip to importance of the Spanish language.

Another trend that has emerged is the outsourcing of work in the BPO space to India, from overseas businesses that require the use of Spanish as the language of communication to cater to their customers.
