What does the course involve?
The opportunity to study the growth of world tourism, how this has changed over time, how people travel to resorts and the impact of tourism. We’ll teach you the skills and qualities you need to get into the travel and tourism industry, from cabin crew and airport operations to working in different UK and European destinations.
We are proud of our connections with Birmingham Airport and our dedicated teaching base at BHX to offer you a relevant training environment and instant access to facilities. You will also experience the aircraft fuselage in our sister college for safety demonstrations.
Our highly experienced teachers have all worked in the travel industry and are able to give you a tailored and highly practical approach with additional learning support available if you need it.
We include trips within the course to help you fully understand the visitor attraction units, and these can be anywhere from Italy to Bournemouth. This is an excellent course for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the industry and equivalent to one A Level.
Course Outline
Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Industry
This unit will explain the range of travel and tourism organisations as well as their ownership and interrelationships. You will get to research recent and historical developments in the UK travel and tourism industry and its current contribution to the UK economy.
Unit 2: Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
In this unit you will evaluate customer service provided by travel and tourism organisations as well as making recommendations for improvements. You will explain how organisations manage customer service and their policies and procedures. You will also demonstrate the delivery of customer service in travel and tourism situations.
Unit 3: Preparing for a Career in Travel and Tourism
This unit will you give you the opportunity to analyse opportunities and the impact of current trends in travel and tourism. You will prepare for a career in travel and tourism by producing a CV or personal file, conducting a skills audit, and completing an application document to a professional standard. You will also plan for and take part in an interview, evaluate your performance, and produce an action plan.
Unit 4: Travel and Tourism Destinations
In this unit you will describe the appeal of travel and tourism destinations to the different types of travellers by researching different destinations within the UK, Europe and worldwide. You will also produce a destination recommendation for a traveller based on your research and evaluation.
Unit 5: UK Visitor Attractions
In this unit you will describe man-made and natural visitor attractions and understand how visitor attractions enhance the appeal to customers. You will review visitor management techniques used at a visitor attraction and understand the impacts of a visitor attraction on the local community and area.
Unit 17: The Cruise Industry
This unit will give you the opportunity to understand the cruise industry and how it has developed. You will look at different cruise packages, operators and their appeal to different types of customers. You will also recommend a cruise package for different types of customers and give reasons for your recommendations.
Assessment
Assessment will take various forms including practical assessment, written coursework and presentations.
