Why study Travel & Tourism?

Since 2010 Travel and Tourism has been the fastest growing sector in the UK in employment terms, providing more than 3.1 million jobs in a variety of areas including tour operations, airlines, visitor attractions and travel agents as well as strategic authorities dealing with travel to the UK. It is also one of the world’s largest industries providing numerous opportunities for overseas employment.

Entry Requirements

In addition to our general entry requirements, you must have:

  • GCSE English – grade 3

  • GCSE Maths – grade 3

The Course

Students will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about this employment area, you will develop important skills for a career in travel and tourism or similar service industries.

Course Activities

Students will experience a range of activities and assessments which will include case studies, discussions, presentations, and role plays. All work is internally assessed and will include a combination of assignments and coursework as well as more practical tasks.
The course also provides potential opportunities for work experience within the industry through one the UK’s leading travel companies who are locally based. Throughout the course you will work independently and in groups and will need to carry out significant independent research, often through organised visits to a range of attractions and industry related organisations including: 

  • Thorpe Park, Woburn Safari Park: Investigating their customer service, business operations and marketing

  • Destinations Show, London: Learning about and collecting information about different destinations

  • Cambridge, London, Milton Keynes: Conducting mystery Shopper investigations, carrying out observations & surveys with a variety of retail agencies & exploring visitor attractions

  • Overseas Residential – Barcelona: Acquiring first-hand knowledge of a popular European destination & looking at the impacts of tourism, as well as gaining practical experience of delivering welcome meetings and guided tours for specific units

Career and Progression Opportunities

This course is designed to prepare students for employment in the tourism industry or for entry to an appropriate university course. Students who achieve this qualification could progress to further studies for a degrees and foundation degree in Tourism & Leisure Management, International Tourism Management, Hospitality, Tourism & Event Management, Tourism with Business or Aviation Management.
