Course Details

This course is for all health care professionals who work in NHS, Health and Social Care settings to include Private Nursing and Residential homes supporting patients in their recovery who require blood sampling procedures using various evidence based interventions.

The participants will deliver patient centred care empowering the patient by incorporating the principles of consent, ethics, effective communication and capacity in the whole recovery journey in line with current practice guidelines. The importance of health and safety and infection control will be emphasised to participants in delivering this service.

Course Aims

For CCT Skilled Trainers to deliver high quality accredited face to face training with practical skills sessions which is tailored to organisational need and policies. For CCT skilled Trainers to deliver training which fulfils the current Core Skills Training Framework(CSTF), current CQC and NICE guidelines.

Course Objectives

  • Be able to gain knowledge of the definition of Venepuncture?

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the preparation process of blood sampling

  • Be able to gain knowledge of the assembling equipment used in the process of taking blood

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the step by step process of taking blood

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the process of using the open and closed systems in blood sampling in the laboratory

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the concepts of Capillary and Arterial blood sampling

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the risk factors associated with various types of blood sampling

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the benefits of good blood sampling

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of blood sampling and the principles of record keeping as well as structured guidelines of completing incident reports

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the principles of managing cross contamination, disinfection of blood and body fluids as well as spillages in the laboratory

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the benefits of effective communication and the impact of poor communication during the whole process of venepuncture

  • Be able to gain knowledge and skills of the principles of consent and ethics in the whole process of venepuncture

  • What is Venepuncture?

  • The preparation process of blood sampling

  • The step by step process of taking blood

  • The process of using the open and closed systems in blood sampling in the laboratory

  • The concepts of Capillary and Arterial  blood sampling

  • The risk factors associated with various types of blood sampling

  • The benefits of good blood sampling

  • Blood sampling and  the principles of record keeping as well as structured guidelines of completing incident reports

  • The principles of managing cross contamination, disinfection of blood and body fluids as well as spillages in the laboratory

  • The principles of infection Control during the whole process of venepuncture

  • The benefits of effective communication and the impact of poor communication during the whole process of venepuncture

  • The principles of consent and ethics in the whole process of venepuncture

  • Current Nice Guidelines and its recommendations of the course content of venepuncture training
