At first glance, the viola, this bowed string instrument can easily be confused with a violin by an uninitiated listener. Indeed, apart from the size, outwardly they are similar.

But one has only to listen to its timbre – the difference is immediately noticeable, surprisingly soft and slightly muffled sound resembles a contralto – soft and expressive.

When thinking of stringed instruments, the viola is usually forgotten in favour of its smaller or larger counterparts, but the rich timbre and interesting history make it worth a closer look. 

Viola is a philosopher’s instrument, without attracting attention, he modestly settled himself in the orchestra between the violin and cello.

Learning to play the viola is rather difficult from books or from the Internet, the majority of the “do it yourself” solutions cover only the tip of the iceberg, providing a small portion of the necessary information.
