  • “I try to amplify and enable the student’s reasons for playing. Building a strong technique is important, so that they will eventually be able to play anything they want! Listening is also essential when learning to perform and interpret music.” • M.M., Manhattan School of Music Violinist Carrie Frey grew up in South Carolina and moved to New York City to pursue her Masters Degree in Contemporary Performance at The Manhattan School of Music. She began the violin at age three and the viola her junior year of high school. She originally chose the violin “because both of my sisters are violinists and I wanted to be like them. I then chose the viola because I was drawn to the contemporary repertoire, and because I loved the idea of the “viola personality” – someone who is in the middle of the group, building bridges, and forming the warm core of the chamber music sound.” Carrie has many favorite composers, from Machaut and Bach to the music of our own time including Eliane Radigue, Salvatore Sciarrino, Sabrina Schroeder, and Taylor Brook. “On my phone, Avishai Cohen (the bassist), Kendrick Lamar, and Beyonce are my go tos. I love working with composers in person and performing music by people who are still alive and involved! Chamber music is definitely my favorite, especially when it’s with my string trio, Chartreuse. Getting to know a piece intimately, making interpretive decisions, and then getting on stage with people I love and showing our work is an experience that can’t be beat. I love the challenge of preparing for a solo performance, and the rush of being part of a huge orchestra, but the person-to-person connection of chamber music is the most fun for me.” Carrie is deeply committed to building skills and the appreciation of music in her students. “I try to amplify and enable the student’s reasons for playing. Building a strong technique is important, so that they will eventually be able to play anything they want! Listening is also essential when learning to perform and interpret music. I would say my priorities are to develop the student’s ears, their skills on the instrument, and a strong rhythmic foundation, all while pursuing a fundamental love of music.” Carrie has other interests outside of music. “I read science fiction, go on long walks, and make up cookie and muffin recipes with the ingredients I have on hand!”
