Course Details

West Coast Swing originated from an earlier dance known as the Savoy Style Lindy, which was danced at the Savoy Ballroom in New York in the early 1930's.

It has developed into the modern and sophisticated swing we know today.  The dance is socially based and can be performed to a wide variety of music.

Dean Collins, who arrived in the Los Angeles area around 1937, was influential in developing the style of swing dance on the West Coast of the United States, as both a performer and teacher.

It is characterized by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection.  It is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor and West Coast Swing allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together.
