Course Details

This course provides students with the knowledge to be a competent person in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of workplace hazardous substances as well as an understanding of the potential adverse effects these substances pose to people, property and the environment.

 

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Knowledge of hazardous substances including legislation requirements.
  • Properties and effects of hazardous substances.
  • Technical vocabulary.
  • Interpreting product specific information.
  • Documentation for hazardous substances including inventories and safety data sheets.
  • Storage, separation, segregation, tracking, handling and disposal.
  • Emergency management and preparation.
  • Understanding potential adverse effects of hazardous substances to people and the environment.
  • Spill response.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of classifying hazardous substances.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe storage, tracking requirements, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Describe response to uncontrolled release of hazardous substances
