What will I learn?

This 2 day course will cover the following

Module 1: Introduction to Wound Care

  • Basics of wound healing

  • Phases of wound healing: haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and maturation.

  • Factors influencing wound healing.

  • Types of wounds

  • Acute vs. chronic wounds.

  • Common wound ethology (e.g., surgical, traumatic, diabetic ulcers, venous ulcers).

  • Wound Assessment

  • Wound classification and staging.

  • Tools and scales for wound assessment: BRADEN and Water low

Module 2: Wound Cleaning

  • Principles of wound Cleaning

  • Sterile and clean techniques.

  • Solutions and methods for wound cleansing.

  • Debridement Techniques (Theory)

  • Types of debridement: mechanical, enzymatic, autolytic, surgical.

  • Indications and contraindications.

Module 3: Dressing Selection and Application

  • Types of dressings

  • Characteristics and indications for various dressings (e.g., gauze, hydrocolloids, foams, alginates).

  • Advanced wound care products (e.g., antimicrobial dressings, negative pressure wound therapy).

  • Application techniques

  • Aseptic technique for dressing changes.

  • Frequency of dressing changes and considerations.

Module 4: Pain Management in Wound Care

  • Pain Assessment

  • Tools for pain assessment in wound care.

  • Pain management strategies

  • Pharmacological approaches (e.g., analgesics, topical anaesthetics).

Training can be delivered either in our state of the art training ward at Andover College or at the client’s premises. The course content can be amended to take account of the client’s specific training needs.
