InDesign is a program that allows you to layout graphic elements on pages for print. One other very important feature of a page layout program, and InDesign’s other main purpose, is its output features.

Illustrator is a vector drawing program. It is often used to draw illustrations, cartoons, diagrams, charts and logos. Unlike bitmap images that stores information in a grid of dots, Illustrator uses mathematical equations to draw out the shapes.

The software is more of a graphics suite than just a simple program, providing many features for users to edit graphics, including contrast adjustment, color balancing, adding special effects like borders to images, and it is capable of working with multiple layers and multiple pages.
