Skill Development Initiative

Calculations based on the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO 2017–2018) estimate the active health workforce at just 3.12 million.This translates into one doctor for every 1,404 people and 1.7 nurses per 1,000 people. This is lower than the global benchmark of one doctor and three nurses per 1,000 people.This significant gap in number of skilled health workers shows the weak infrastructure of the health delivery system and is an obstacle that the Government has recognized and trying to address.The second gap is the ‘Quality’ gap. The quality gap can only be assessed on the healthcare workers already present in the system.

In all the debates for strengthening healthcare access, the focus predominantly is on the quantity gaps and the quality or skill gaps get missed out.While filling the QUANTITY gaps can take time, building the skills to address the QUALITY gaps needs to be done immediately to ensure a positive impact on healthcare delivery and customer experience.This crisis of skill development has to be turned into an opportunity towards growth.Also, in this era of mutating bacteria, pandemics with their multiple waves, etc., many organisations prefer skilled employees over less skilled ones as they have outstanding career growth, and they help boost the organisation in the same way with proficient working, leading to better healthcare delivery outcomes.With this new approach towards skill development, India can definitely move forward towards its targeted results.
