A Public University in the USA received a Mammoth $550M Donation

In a first around the USA or anywhere in the world, Western Michigan received a massive donation of $550M from anonymous alumni and will go to the university's foundation over the next 10 years. This is by far the largest single gift ever to a public university in the US or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

This was announced by the school as it was decided that the gift will be split into three large pots: $300 million for Western Michigan’s Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine; $200 million for need-based financial aid, faculty hiring and other university initiatives, and $50 million for athletic programs.

WMU President Edward Montgomery said,

"We do a good job in promoting social mobility,". "Our donors believe in that vision. ... I’m immensely pleased to have this gift. Its size allows it to be transformative."

The gift is expected to take off the burden of higher education from families trying to pay for the tuition but finding it hard to make ends meet.
