Course Overview
A Level Law develops knowledge and understanding of the English Legal System. The study of Law at A Level will enable you to develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
It will also develop your problem-solving skills through the application of legal rules, together with an understanding of legal method and reasoning. These skills provide excellent preparation for those students who wish to progress to degree level study or pursue a wide range of careers.
What’s on the course?
Firstly, we will be looking at the nature and rule of law, the differences between enforceable legal rules and principles, and other rules and norms of behaviour.
We will also look at the equity and fairness of the rule of law. Secondly, we will be considering the workings of the English Legal System and look at the different courts within the English Legal System and the work of the different personnel that work within these courts.
Alongside these topics, we will be looking at three substantive areas of law: Criminal, Tort, and Contract. In each of these areas, we will look at the theory behind that area of law along with practical examples.
Students follow the AQA A Level Law specification.

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language).
What you will Learn

Assessment
You will be assessed through written exams, which will be a mixture of question types including multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions.
The A Level is awarded on the basis of exams held at the end of the second year which cover the full course.
Progression
Once you have finished your Law A Level you will have picked up a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse, debate, use cases to provide evidence and communicate effectively. These will prepare you for continuing with your studies at university, entering an apprenticeship or going into employment.
Career Options
Jobs in the legal profession include Police, CPS, Solicitors, Barristers, Para-legal and, Legal Executives. There are also opportunities with various council and government departments or in companies that have their own legal departments as well jobs in finance and banking.

In addition, we support the skills needs of the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) through our Academy located within the airport; and we support the skills needs of thousands of employees across the region through our Trade Union Education offer.
Stockport College is also home to our hugely successful University Centre. We offer courses at Higher National Level, Foundation Degree Level and Degree Level; as well as Higher Level Apprenticeships and the new Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs).
Criminology is a Level 3 Diploma and students will take this course alongside other A-level subjects (e.g. criminology, sociology and history). It is assessed by both coursework (50%) and examinations (50%).
The Council for Licensed Conveyancer qualification is a specialised law qualification. It is aimed at those who are working in, or who wish to return to a conveyancing related career.
The law affects all aspects of human endeavour and we can see the effects of law in disciplines such as arts and media, business, sciences, sports and entertainment. In almost everything we do, we are governed by and protected by law.
In the UK the legal sector is worth approximately £60 billion, with over 12,000 organisations and just under 21 million employees, plus approximately 15,000 self-employed barristers. The UK’s legal sector supports trade and commerce around the world.
This study programme supports students who need to complete GCSE resits in both English and Maths. The College Diploma emphasises skills development at this level, so a supportive programme of maths and English is compulsory and will make up the bulk hours of study.
