ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

Emergency care for victims of a cardiac arrest includes providing Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support as quickly as possible. Patients in hospital should have the advantage of receiving both of these interventions in a short period of time.

Since patients requiring cardiac life support have a far greater chance of survival when there is effective advanced life support available, those involved with provision of emergency care should have the skills necessary to provide this level of care.

This program is designed to provide those involved in the delivery of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) with the knowledge and skills to do so according to standards established by the Heart and Stroke Foundation within their respected professions.

Upon completion of this two day Provider Course the ACLS Provider will become familiar with: 

• Managing the first 10 minutes of the resuscitation of a patient in cardiac arrest

Advanced skills acquired during the program include:

• Airway management (invasive and non-invasive adjuncts) appropriate to the learner
• Defibrillation including use of AED (automatic external defibrillator)
• Transcutaneous Pacing / Synchronized Cardioversion
• Basic rhythm recognition and recognition on a 12 lead ECG of the most common changes of the Acute Coronary Syndromes
• Selection of appropriate medications consistent with the ACLS algorithms
• Using the ACLS approach to complete Primary & Secondary ABCD surveys.

All registrants must have a BLS Provider CPR certification obtained within twelve months prior to the ACLS Course from the Heart and Stroke Foundation.Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a 2 day (16 hour) Program that is valid for 2 years from date of successful completion.
