Our course consists of an introductory day on a trailer yacht followed by a day onshore doing theory then seven days on the water tuition on a Laser dinghy, nine days in total. The aim of our course is to give you the skills to sail a dinghy from A to B in any direction with confidence. The course is mostly practical; we’ve minimized the theory beyond what is needed to teach you to handle the boat.
For the seven days tuition on the water, we use a dinghy commonly known as a LASER fitted with a small sail. To be able to handle this dinghy you will need a reasonable level of fitness and agility as the dinghy will capsize occasionally and you will have to be able to right the boat and pull yourself back in to the cockpit. This is like the effort required to pull yourself out of a deep swimming pool without the using a ladder.
We have an active fleet of lasers, sunbursts, optimists, and p class dinghies. Club racing takes places most weekends between September and April. We also have an active Learn to Sail programme for both Juniors and Adults, and a Coaching programme for advanced learners. Estuary Club series are held in conjunction with Christchurch and Pleasant Point clubs.
The Clubhouse is located just over the Ferrymead Bridge heading towards Sumner. Recently we have completed construction of our brand new boat shed which gives us a fantastic, modern facility that will stand the club in good stead over the coming decades. This is the easiest club in Canterbury for launching and retrieving boats with plenty of ramps and wide shallows.
