Course Details

Having already notched up a pocketful of sewing skills this course aims to perfect and hone your cutting, sewing, pressing and finishing techniques  building confidence. It will introduce garment construction with interfacings, interlinings and linings.  With an emphasise on 'Patience and Practise makes Perfect',  students are encouraged to choose a more advanced pattern to what they have used before.

Students at this level are encouraged to think, sew and design creatively and problem solve.  Students must be able to follow a paper pattern on their own and think logically through construction processes.  Working at the highest level for HBO ‘Game of Thrones’ Christine shares many of her tailoring skills and techniques used when constructing the costumes for the principal actors on Seasons 1-4. She continues to work on many film productions, most recently Dungeons and Dragons in March 2021.

What To Bring:  Please bring a project of your choice: new pattern and fabric (calico also if you wish to toile up first, which is recommended).  Please bring an advanced project and material to your first class. Advance is a step up from what you have made before.  If you are not sure what project to tackle next, don’t worry, we can discuss this one week 1.

About Your Course:

  • Choose a more advanced pattern, e.g a lined jacket.
  • Or: use a favourite pattern from before and make it in a more 'difficult' cloth e.g tweeds, silks, lace, velvet, pattern matching.
  • Fine tune your skills in cutting, pressing, stitching and finishing to create a professional garment.
  • Fit your garment by toiling, altering the toile and altering the pattern.
  • Construction using organza, sleeve heads, shoulder pads and interfacing.
  • Hand stitching techniques throughout garment making.
  • Inserting lining by both the 'fashion and tailoring' methods. By machine and by hand.
  • Although not essential, it is encouraged that students will spend time between weekly classes working on their project.
