Our introductory courses are designed for those with no previous knowledge of ASL. They introduce grammatical structures and facial expressions according to their functions, which are then used in situations connected to everyday activities in the deaf community.
You learn how to relate to each other and build up your cross-cultural awareness and understanding in a classroom with no spoken conversation.
You will learn the basics of ASL, including vocabulary, non-manual signals, grammar, and syntax.
Learn to exchange personal information, identify others, give simple directions, talk about living situations, leisure activities and more. Also included is an introduction to Deaf culture. The courses use the Signing Naturally Level 1 Curriculum.

In our Division, Sign Language Interpreters  communicate with and interpret for deaf and hard of hearing students that sign using either American Sign Language or Signed Exact English.Â

Students in this class will be taught American Sign Language (ASL). This class will focus on expressive and receptive ASL skills (equivalent to speaking and listening).
It is a visual language that does not translate word-for-word into the English language.
