Course Details

This course offers an introduction to the alphabet, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary of Modern Standard Arabic. Students will learn to read the primary consonants and vowels of the Arabic alphabet in the context of several key everyday words and greetings.

Snippets of grammar (grammatical gender, adjectival phrases, nominal sentences, noun case-declension) will be delivered through concise outlines and activated through interactive exercises and audio-visual materials. Students will learn to read and reproduce a complete introductory conversation in Arabic, exchanging basic greetings and concise biographical information.

 

Course outline

  • Introducing oneself & exchanging basic biographical information; Basic Greetings
  • The Arabic alphabet; Grammatical gender (masculine, feminine)
  • The definite article; Adjectival phrases; Nominal sentences
  • Introduction to “case” declensions for nouns & adjectives

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Learn to read, write and pronounce the main consonants, vowels & symbols of the Modern Standard Arabic alphabet
  • Learn to greet others, introduce oneself and ask others for personal information
  • Learn to construct simple adjectival phrases & nominal sentences
  • Develop a basic understanding of what “case” declensions are for nouns & adjectives and how they work in Arabic
