Course Details

The bachelor of civil engineering (honours) is a comprehensive, four-year degree program designed to empower you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the dynamic field of civil engineering. You will develop a deep understanding of the principles underpinning professional engineering practice through rigorous coursework, hands-on projects, and real-world experiences.

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) program offers outstanding preparation for a career in civil engineering by covering a wide range of specialisations. These include structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrology, hydraulic engineering, highway and traffic engineering, water and wastewater engineering, project management and other complex engineering activities. This comprehensive approach ensures that you'll be well-equipped to thrive in the field of civil engineering.

Civil engineers play a critical role in designing and improving infrastructure systems and processes that allow humans and nature to coexist with minimal impact.

  • We need civil engineering professionals to design, construct, maintain and operate structures such as multi-storey buildings, bridges, tunnels, commercial complexes, oil rig platforms, water systems, road and traffic systems and foundation supports. Modern society wouldn't be able to function without civil engineers, which means your career prospects will be strong and diverse.

Level One

  • The common first year lays a foundation in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry and introduces the disciplines available to you for further study. You'll learn to apply your developing math and science knowledge to real-life problems and begin to understand the interaction between civil engineering and society.

Level Two

  • You'll develop your sub-professional skills in civil engineering, such as the ability to design common place engineering artefacts and tackle complex engineering problems in the context of suitable theoretical treatment. At the same time, you'll gain some appreciation for the breadth of civil engineering. Theory is developed in parallel with application, with theoretical insights to be further developed at levels three and four using more complex scenarios.

Level Three

  • This level will develop your core professional skills in civil engineering, including structural, water, transportation, geomechanics and project management. The water and geomechanics groups also share another unit in groundwater field, which is a crucial aspect of civil engineering.

Level Four

  • This is a period of specialisation in civil engineering where you'll complete two core units and a minimum of three electives from the civil engineering department. You'll also be able to pursue two electives from anywhere within the University, some of which are multidisciplinary.

Quality education

  • Monash University is ranked #34 in the world for civil and structural engineering (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024) and rated Tier 5 (Excellent) in D-Setara Engineering by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. Our curriculum is designed to address complex engineering problems, preparing students to deliver professional engineering practices in their careers.

Professional Recognition

  • This degree is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia. It is also recognised by the Washington Accord, which means that our civil engineering graduates can work in any other signatory country without the need to requalify, making it an ideal choice for students seeking competent engineering solutions in a global context.

The common first year: Explore six engineering disciplines

  • The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a common first year, allowing you to experience a range of disciplines before deciding on a specialisation. You'll develop your foundational skills for engineering before deciding which of the six specialisations to pursue in your second year.

Future-focused: Professional engineering solutions for a sustainable world

  • We help you prepare for your civil engineering career early, with a focus on the fundamentals and a taste of industry experience through industry-driven and research-oriented projects. When you graduate, you'll be ready to help advance society with your knowledge on sustainable design and construction of infrastructures.

Gain work experience: Hone your skills in real-world settings

  • Work experience amplifies your learning and hones your engineering knowledge and hands-on skills including project management techniques. As part of your course, you'll complete a 12-week work placement after your third year. Our students have interned with companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Gamuda, IBM and more.

Kick-start your professional development

  • The Student Leaders Network program gives you the opportunity to engage with industry professionals through workshops, industry site visits, networking evenings, and a leadership summit over the course of a year. You'll develop critical leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

Join an engineering student club

  • Our student-run clubs lets you learn new skills and engage with industry to broaden your networks. You’ll get hands on with real-world engineering projects and competitions as you work in multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative products or drive positive change.

Try your hand at research

  • Apply for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program to experience a genuine research environment. You’ll learn from leading researchers and acquire knowledge and skills that’ll prepare you for your final year project and higher degree studies.

Volunteer with Engineers Without Borders: Implement professional engineering solutions for local communities

  • The Monash University Malaysia student chapter is involved in a wide range of projects benefiting local communities. Our students have helped to install a micro hydro generator for a school in Budok Aru, constructed a workshop for a shelter home, renovated refugee schools, and more.

You’ll find challenging and rewarding opportunities in the following areas:

  • Government infrastructure projects
  • Water and wastewater industries
  • Construction and mining
  • Roads and traffic industries
  • Marine and resort developments
  • Property and land development
  • Consulting firms.
