Basic Fire Awareness

This course in basic fire safety will raise awareness of the dangers of fire, the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of a fire starting and what to do in the event of fire. It provides an overview of workplace fire safety legislation, the development and spread of fire, actions in the event of fire and fire extinguisher theory as well as an introduction to the roles of the Fire Warden, Incident Controller and the Fire and Rescue Services.

This course is designed to enable the learner to gain a basic understanding of: -

• Fire safety legislation
• The science of fire (i.e. what is fire?, how does it start and spread?)
• Physical and financial cost of fire
• What to do if a fire is discovered
• What to do if trapped by a fire
• Fire measures within buildings (i.e. active or passive)
• Evacuation strategies and assembly points
• Fire extinguishers
• The role of the Fire Warden, Incident Controller and the Fire and Rescue Services
