This elemental two day beginners' course is intended for those new to woodworking or with limited experience. The focus will be on the fundamentals of woodworking including tool sharpening, sawing and planing and will solely be on the use of hand tools. The intention is for participants to gain a basic understanding of working with wood and to leave with confidence to move on to the next stage.
The day will begin with coffee or tea, introductions and - as with all courses - an explanation of working safely in the workshop.
At Dovetail, courses and workshops have been designed for individuals with a range of experience. This includes the beginner - taking up woodwork for the first time, to those with a degree of know-how looking to move on to the next stage or improve their skills.
As an Apprentice Joiner, you could be working on site fitting windows, stairs, skirting boards or constructing partition walls, or you could be employed as a bench joiner making items of furniture such as staircases etc.
Woodworking provides an excellent play environment for children to engage in problem solving, an important skill for children to develop from an early age for their future.
At this level, no prior knowledge or skills in furniture making is assumed. Students are taken from the basic understanding of tools and materials through to the making of a furniture project.
This regular class in spoon carving introduces you to the art of carving with an axe, a knife and a crook knife. By carving a spoon, you can focus on becoming familiar with the tools of the craft without the pressure of knowing what to carve.
This course will allow you to recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding and to demonstrate your competence in a real workplace environment so you can work as a Site Carpenter within the construction industry.
