Orleans Tech’s Carpentry students learn hands-on new construction skills. They build a house to scale in order to learn framing, drywall, rough and fine finishing, siding, shingled roofing, and door and window installation. Students construct a full size deck and staircase. Training includes blueprint reading, safety practices, and trade mathematics.

This class represents a bit of a departure from the structure of our 10 week classes. In those, the heavy emphasis is on teaching new skills and information, and the class projects are seen as a hands on manner of practicing those skills.
In this course we'll cover the basics of traditional joinery including hand-cut as well as machine cut dovetails, mortise and tenons, miters, rabbets, and dados.
Starting with rough hewn boards, students move through all the main machines in the shop. We cover jointing, planing and spend a good amount of time on the table saw.
This course is designed for the beginning wood turner. All students receive demonstrations on how to prepare a wood blank for spindle turning, how to glue up wood properly for success during turning, machine and tool vocabulary and safety
This course provides the student with carpentry basics. It follows the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) training format.
