Our modern classes cover a variety of styles/categories including Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Body conditioning, and on occasion, Musical theatre and African.
I often have people enquire about “Contemporary Dance”. In my opinion, this is a very vague term and the definition differs depending on who you ask.
I think the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance” is an example that the kids will know, of the variety of styles that can fall under the heading of “Contemporary”…but also perhaps contributing to part of the confusion, as they showcase everything from Lyrical, to traditional modern dance, various style concept pieces etc., all underneath the heading of Contemporary.
A choreographer’s personal style has much to do with their definition of Contemporary Dance. Basically it all stems from MODERN dance which stems from BALLET.
The words “contemporary” and “modern” just mean “current” or “now” dance. Modern dance was originally a break away or rebellion against the social structures of the 1880’s and there was a need for a type of dance that offered something more than the rigid, structure of ballet.
Dancers wanted more freedom of expression, so interpretive modern dance was born. This eventually turned into set curriculum which were known as “modern dance” syllabi (Martha Graham/Lester Horton whose techniques are still taught the world over, for example). Nowadays the term Modern dance encompasses so much, as does “contemporary”. The best ways for me to explain the two are: A dance style which is ever-evolving and constantly changing.
So… To elaborate on what WE DO at GIFT….
Our modern classes cover a variety of styles/categories including Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Body conditioning, and on occasion, Musical theatre and African. These classes are wonderful for technique, posture, strength, control and artistry. Our modern requires ballet based technique and the Gr 2 and older dancers will be required to take a minimum of 2x modern classes per week.
One class a week is not enough to really develop technique and flexibility. We also need to work on Eisteddfod and exam work and cannot sacrifice technical training to work on choreography alone. As with Hip Hop, every 2nd year we alternate between concert work, and DanceCor exam work. 2021 is a concert year!
Uniform – Black leggings/tights and Black leotard with our studio logo will be available for order very soon! No loose fitting clothes. Hair must be tied off the face in a pony tail or bun (bun is best for technique classes as we need the hair secured when practicing turns). Girls may wear the fitted Gift of Dance vest during practices with hot pants or leggings, but will need a leotard for the exams end of the year.
Before it was Gift of Dance, Ruley Bartie successfully ran Ruley school of Dance for several years in Durbanville in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa.
Amanda Klotz (See the "Teachers" page of the website for Amanda's bio) moved to Cape Town from Canada in 2006 and began teaching for Ruley in 2007.
In 2010 when Ruley decided she was nearly ready to retire, Amanda gradually began to take over the dance school and it officially became “Gift of Dance” in 2011.
Everyone who chooses to embrace it has been blessed with "the Gift Of Dance"!
The goal of our dance studio is to tap into that GIFT and expose dancers at an early age to as many unique opportunities as possible to "enhance the dance" in each and every dancer. I believe the Gift has been given to share, and to be a blessing to others. I also believe that every single experience, from classes, to workshops, to performances, competitions etc… make a dancer better. So the more experiences they have the more opportunity to improve and grow, and learn.
We take part in Competitions and Exams and have performed regularly at various events and venues like Ratanga Junction, the Artscape Theatre, The Baxter Theatre, CTICC, Hillsong Church and many more! Dancers have achieved their WP and SA colours for Hip Hop on various occasions.
Gift of dance has 2 divisions. We have our competition division and then, everything else!
This includes – Technique classes, Eisteddfod choreography, Exam work, and concert choreography.
Classes in 2021 will be taught by Amanda, Shameelah, Caitlin and Jaime. We will also still see other members of the team from time to time as our schedule opens up to the schools and we can add in more classes. You'll surely be seeing Anzelle, Graham, Anri and Jaime around soon.
