Slowdance is the breakaway from Freestyle dance whilst Contemporary is the breakaway from Ballet. These two styles now have many crossover features but are perhaps competed in different ways.

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary often embodies a lot of lyrical qualities and floor work.

Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet.
There are a range of different characteristics for contemporary dance. Most notedly it is not a technique but rather an entire genre of dance. It includes bits of Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical and Modern dance. Strong leg work such as Ballet is common in Contemporary.
