Lessons are structured to work on technique and learning open chords. Familiar pop songs are introduced each week, building up repertoire.
Commitment to regular attendance is important so that the class can progress together.
Please note that all students need to be enrolled at NCMA and need to organise their own instrument.
Situated in the heart of Nelson, we offer opportunities to learn an instrument and to rehearse and perform as an individual or as part of a group. We are also a performance venue and our audiences enjoy concerts held in the Nelson School of Music Auditorium and brand new performance space in the Rainey Wing.
We are a non-profit, charitable organisation and operate with generous support from Nelson City Council in the form of an annual grant as well as funding from a small number of key funding partners.
Our vision is to be New Zealand's most vibrant, innovative and accessible music community.

The percussion family is thought to include the oldest musical instruments – anything that creates sound by being struck or scraped by a beater – and are characterized by providing rhythm.
The student learns rhythm, melody, reading music, chords and a lot more whilst having a chance to try different instruments. Great for kids that are keen on music but are not ready to commit to one instrument.
Guitar students should be coordinated enough to operate both hands independently. Students will learn plucking skills, how to read guitar music and some chords.
