Target Audience

Care and Support staff in a variety of settings and Housing Support Teams who are providing direct care and support. This course is also suitable for maintenance teams within Housing and Social Care settings.

This course has been developed to look at COSHH within the workplace and gain an understanding of how this knowledge should be applied within the learners’ own workplaces. This course will benefit all staff whose job roles involve them working with substances that can be hazardous to health.

This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:

  • Face to face tutor facilitation, questionnaires, COSHH signs, data sheets for breakout groups, questioning and participation and an end of session assessment.

This course has been developed and mapped to current occupational standards, qualification frameworks and the following documents and resources:

Course Content

  • Employer/employee responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002

  • Definition and types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace

  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes

  • COSHH – The eight steps

  • Hazard information and packaging, (CHIP),- Protection by information (symbols and phrases

Learning Outcomes

After attending this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of good waste management practice in the prevention of the spread of infection

  • Outline own responsibilities, and the responsibilities of others, relating to Health and Safety in a work setting

  • Describe procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness

  • Know how to handle hazardous substances and materials

  • Carry out own responsibilities for Health and Safety
