A Dutch class at Indy Language Center can help you travel more places than you might think! Dutch (Nederlands) is spoken not only in the Netherlands, but also in Belgium, Suriname, and the Dutch Antilles (Caribbean).

Over 23 million people worldwide speak Dutch, including former colonies South Africa and Indonesia. And according to the 2010 census approx. 136,000 people in the US still speak Dutch!
Dutch spoken by the 17th and 18th century settlers evolved into Afrikaans, one of the official languages of South Africa.

With an estimated 90 to 95 percent Dutch origin in Afrikaans vocabulary, a Dutch speaker and Afrikaans speaker can communicate with each other.  The main difference between the two languages is that Afrikaans does not have grammatical gender and the grammar is less complex.
