With the increasing presence of electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs and HEVs) on our roads daily, the demand for certified automotive service technicians capable of safely diagnosing, servicing and repairing them is also rising.

Are you ready to incorporate this specialized knowledge and skillset into your Automotive Service Technician (AST) toolkit?

Build on your previous understanding of conventional vehicle systems with this 36-hour course to safely and confidently diagnose and service the most common high-voltage electric vehicles.

Get six hours of self-paced online learning in preparation for 30 hours of intensive hands-on training with our expert industry-trained instructors at our automotive training facility on SAIT's Calgary campus.

Topics covered include electric vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle battery construction, fuel cells, electric motor controllers, inverters and auxiliary accessories.  

This course was made possible with the Government of Canada’s investment (2022-2024) in Canadian Colleges for a Resilient Recovery (C2R2), a coalition of post-secondary institutions including SAIT focused on developing demand-driven workforce training solutions for a clean economy. 

Note: Registration for this course closes seven days before the course start date. You’ll need to upload your proof of certification documentation at the time you register by following the online prompts provided.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:   

  • apply high-voltage safety procedures
  • distinguish different categories of high-voltage vehicles
  • service high-voltage powertrain systems
  • service high-voltage battery charging systems
  • compare high-voltage vehicle transmission type
  • service high-voltage vehicle temperature management systems
  • distinguish the maintenance procedures for high-voltage vehicles
  • associate causes for common symptoms found in current high-voltage vehicles.

You’ll demonstrate your knowledge acquisition through online module quizzes, practical shop activities, online and in-class participation and by completing a supervised final written exam during class time.

Successful completion of the online training component is required before starting the hands-on shop training. Punctuality and attendance for all shop sessions on campus are required for a safe and optimal learning experience.
