Course Details

Students in this course will advance their knowledge in ECG recognition and evaluation, 12-lead electrocardiogram and pacemaker ECG evaluation. A detailed examination of cellular mechanisms, conduction, pathology and the disease processes responsible for irregularities of the heart rate are presented.

Special attention is directed to methods of determining axis, rate, rhythm, myocardial damage, and conduction disturbances, as well as understanding pacemaker behavior.

Prerequisite(s)

  • 60% in BHSC 2219 and 70% in CARD 2201 and S in CARD 3252

Domestic Fees

$920.86

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the conduction system with regards to its components, their specific cellular properties and mechanisms of impulse transmission.
  • Identify the ECG criteria of the conduction abnormalities.
  • Explain the mechanisms and treatment options of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter
  • Identify the ECG characteristics of the Afib, Aflutter and the escape rhythms
  • Describe the characteristics of various cardiac structural abnormalities how they affect changes in cardiac rhythm and ECG tracings
  • Describe the effects of electrolyte imbalances on the cardiac cycle
  • Describe the mechanisms by which tachyarrhythmia can occur.
  • Identify various tachyarrhythmia on ECG
  • Identify indications for prescribing specific implantable cardiac devices
  • Recognize normal and abnormal single and dual chamber pacemaker function on ECG tracings.
  • Explain the normal functions of a pacemaker
  • Define common programmable parameters and timing cycles of pacemakers
  • Describe the indications for and basic principles of electrophysiology (EP) studies
