This course focuses on the operations and safety aspects of excavation and trenching. Participants are introduced to practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored/unshored slopes and walls.
This course focuses on the operations and safety aspects of excavation and trenching. Participants are introduced to practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored/unshored slopes and walls.
Various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic) are explained. Testing methods are demonstrated, allowing students to use instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the ability to assess employer safety with the current standard, utilize soil-testing methods to classify soil types, determine protective systems for excavation operations, and determine training requirements.
Overview
The Construction Education Foundation was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to construction industry workforce development in Colorado.
Funded by industry partners, government grants, private and public support, CEF creates workforce development opportunities through education, training programs, and scholarships. CEF’s efforts lead to sustainable pathways toward great careers in construction for both high school students and adults.
Mission
Our mission is to recruit, develop, and serve students of the construction industry by promoting innovative educational pathways to rewarding careers in an inclusive, highly-skilled and prosperous construction workforce.
Goals
Excavation and trenching are some of the most hazardous tasks in construction. Open excavations in the Earth's surface can cave in unexpectedly, causing injury or death if the proper protective systems are not in place. This course will provide participants with the knowledge to identify hazards.
This course covers the requirements to manage excavation/trenching operations. The course will include an understanding of the OSHA excavation requirements, excavation/trenching hazards, and control measures.
This training provides a classroom presentation, written test, hands-on practice and skills testing session. The classroom portion focuses on key information needed for safe operation of an excavator.
Participants are taught from OSHA’s excavation standard (29 CFR 1926-Subpart P) which requires workers in trenches and excavations to be protected. Can-ins are perhaps the most feared trenching hazard; but other potentially fatal hazards exist, including asphyxiation, toxic fumes, drowning.
Excavation/Trenching Basic Competent Person training is offered by Safety Compliance Management for all skill level. We not only cover safety, emergency response, and regulatory compliance information, but also prepare students to competently assess, manage, and solve real world situations.
