During the facial hair and knotting course, you will learn the fundamental elements required to make, apply and extend existing facial hair makeup to a standard high enough for HD cameras. You will study postiche including wigs, hair pieces, moustaches, beards and sideburns.

Over the duration of this course you will discover how to use knotting for a realistic look and how to ensure existing facial hair makeup is cut well. You will be encouraged to use a mixture of hair colours for a natural effect and to think about movement and how the facial hair should be dressed.

As part of the course you will learn how to create texture and effects by styling hair at the roots. You will study how to create a beard template using the correct measurements and how to transfer the template to a block.

Our facial hair and knotting course incorporates directional knotting and growth patterns. We will offer you insight into netting construction, darts and whipping, plus technical skills such as how to hide lace from a HD camera.

From Gandalf to Mr T, from Hans Gruber to Hagrid, facial hair often becomes an integral part of a key character’s signature look. In fact, facial hair, knotting and postiche are frequently used for stage and screen and you will discover how to adapt them to suit each platform.

Our course will teach you how to use the correct products such as primer, bruise gel, spirit gum, face paint, dauber, glue and moustache wax. Furthermore, you will learn the basics including application, maintenance plus styling and trimming.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to apply lace facial hair such as a moustache or sideburns
  • The principles of trimming and tonging facial hair, as well as how to remove, clean and block for future use
  • How to make templates for your own bespoke facial pieces
  • The principles of knotting your own piece of facial hair
