Topic for Summer School 2016: Materials science for designers
This course is based on supervised independent student work involving the investigation of the interrelationships among processing, structures, properties and performance of a wide range of materials, that may include (but is not limited to); metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, bio-materials, smart materials.
This course will benefit students from all majors seeking technical or specialist knowledge of how material structures can enhance the design and performance of products.
Project work will allow opportunity to explore individually materials that are of particular interest to other courses and/or projects you are/have been working with in your major. Appropriate prior study: 223.207 Materials Lab

Our History
1886
Arthur Riley establishes New Zealand's first School of Design.
1905
Riley's School of Design becomes the Wellington Technical College, New Zealand's first coeducational multi-purpose day school.
1962
Wellington Technical College splits into Wellington High School and Wellington Polytechnic, with the School of Design remaining its major component.
1999
Wellington Polytechnic merges with Massey University. The College of Design, Fine Arts and Music is established to offer degree programmes in fine art, photography, design, and also music from the Conservatorium of Music.
2014
Toi Atea: Māori art and design, visual and material culture is added.
2015
Following the agreed transfer of the New Zealand School of Music (Classical and Jazz) to Victoria University of Wellington, Massey establishes Te Rewa o Puanga School of Music and Creative Media Production, offering new degrees in popular music and digital media production.

In March 2020 Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts commissioned a street mural by Xoë Hall (Kai Tahu), with a brief to embody the creativity that lives here on the Pukeahu campus.
Do you have a Christmas project you need to finish? Always wanted to make your own Christmas decorations for your home or as gifts?
This course now includes all levels of knitting. So you can knit and purl but want to be able to add more interest to your knitting? This course will look at techniques that add shape and interest to your knitting and can turn a plain piece of knitting into something that makes people go wow.
Knitting workshops are offered by Craft Haven for all skill level. Workshops teaching skills in dozens of different crafts, from crochet to stamping.
A great class for beginners. From any one who may be just starting out sewing, to those who may be a bit rusty and want refresh the sewing basics.
Learn to Sew classes are offered by Stitch O Mat for all skill level.
