Course Details

The course is designed to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, Approved Code of Practice L74 which requires that where a First Aider is not legally required, an employer must still appoint a person to take charge of first aid provision, and this course provides that person with the necessary knowledge to do so.

Where appropriate the severity of many accidents in the workplace can be reduced by the appointment of a qualified appointed person who is capable of taking charge if an injury or illness occurs. BSS aim is to ensure that they understand first aid rather than just learning by rote, because they are more likely to do what is required when it is required for real.

By the end of the course the delegate will have covered how to:

  • Give emergency First Aid to an injured person until medical assistance arrives
  • Recognise and appropriately treat most emergency situations
  • Carry out the functions of an Appointed Person as specified within the First Aid Regulations.

Delegates will work individually and in groups. As some aspects of the course involve floor work, it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing. Previous experience will also be taken into account.This course covers:

  • Taking charge and summoning help
  • Priorities in First Aid
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Control of Bleeding
  • Epilepsy
  • Poisoning
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Suspected fracture
  • Record keeping;
  • Communication and delegation in an emergency
