First Aid at Work Training Course

This EMAS approved course will equip those who wish to become First Aiders, or lapsed First Aiders, in all the essential aspects of occupational First Aid.

Day 1:

• First Aid boxes and kits

• Posture, elevation, examination and pressure (PEEP)

Day 2:

• Respiration and the respiratory system
• Asphyxia – causes
• Treatment of asphyxia
• ABC drill
• Introduction to cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Confirming obstruction of the airway
• Cardiac arrest – a definition
• Contributory factors for heart disease
• Signs and symptoms of heart attacks
• Pre hospital treatment for heart disorders
• Chain of survival
• Functions of nervous system
• Causes of unconsciousness
• Levels of responsiveness – AVPU
• Management of head, eye and facial injuries
• Fainting

Day 3:

• Functions of the skeleton
• Fractures – definition and causes
• Different types of fractures
• Management of fractures in a pre-hospital environment
• Sprains, strains and dislocations
• Functions of the skin
• Burns and scalds
• Treatment of burns
• Poisons and routes of entry
• Treatment for ingestion of poison
• Effects of electrical burns and treatment

Day 4:

• Revision of CPR
• Casualty transportation
• Simple record keeping
• Skills revision
• Theory examination
• Practical examination – an incident to treat
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation examination
