All courses follow a communicative approach. The emphasis is on communicating real meaning. Phonetics is taught to improve pronunciation; grammar is taught in context and cultural elements from France and French speaking countries are included in the lessons.
Our evening course programme in Modern Foreign Languages is designed for anyone interested in learning a new language or improving existing language skills. Courses are for recreational purposes only and do not involve any form of assessment prior to the courses starting, during or after.
Students should note that the modules offered in the evening language courses are not part of any degree pathway and may not be used as credit counting towards a degree programme.
The evening language courses are extremely popular, and the University tries to respond to this demand with the courses and levels that are offered. However, due to timetabling restrictions, not every level of study is available for every language each term.

Established to serve the north-east of Scotland, today our university is a global presence in higher education. A dual focus on our region and the wider world is as important to us today as it was five centuries ago.
Open to all
The University is committed to four key areas which guide our present work and future direction.
All language courses focus on communication skills through task-based learning, with a particular emphasis on listening and speaking.
France. Few countries elicit such passion. Many dream of its joie de vivre and its sexy, chic, inspiring allure. It is for such reasons that it’s the planet’s most visited country. So, why not learn the language it gifted to the world by joining our French lessons.
This is not a French course nor do we give French lessons as such. Learning and improvement comes naturally as week by week you encounter the spoken language in conversation in a social setting or from entertaining guest speakers.
I, Anne Chapman, offer a variety of French courses in Southampton – one-to-one or group lessons available – and would be delighted to help you learn French from the beginning, or expand your existing knowledge of French.
All our language classes are centered around our students and have been designed to develop practical language skills. Each course will run from September to May. Each week you will attend a two-hour class to help progress and consolidate your learning around the four core skills of listening.
