Learning a language allows you more access to a culture, and the German-speaking countries have much to offer.
There are more reasons than one to invest the time in learning a new language, but why German? Learning a language allows you more access to a culture, and the German-speaking countries have much to offer! If you are interested in history, philosophy, psychology, art, music, architecture or any of the sciences, you are well aware that German, Austrian, and Swiss people have played a pivotal role in the development of your field.
Our modern world and Western history has been shaped by Germany, and it is the language of important thinkers like Hannah Arendt, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Bertolt Brecht, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Germany – the economic engine of the EU – is also an important business language.
At Trent we offer introductory language classes, focusing on communication, reading, writing, and translation skills in German.
Learn a new language. Prepare for the future. Start right here. Now is the time to complement and augment your degree – whether you’re planning for your first year of study or your final year. Through the Trent Centre for Language and Linguistics, you can learn a new language (from scratch!), build on what you already know, or delve into the scientific study of language with linguistics.
And as you learn, you’ll be building your résumé, preparing for the future, and all the while opening yourself up to the new perspectives and possibilities that come being able to communicate with more people in more places, at home and around the world. Without setting foot off campus (but opportunities to do so exist!), you will be exposed to new cultures as you immerse yourself in language learning.
Choose to learn American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian or Spanish. Learn an Indigenous language – Mohawk or Nishnaabemowin – through our cooperation with the Indigenous Studies department. Explore the ancient world by taking a course in Latin or ancient Greek.
Or pursue the Option in Languages or the Option in Linguistics, to complement your major(s). These options will provide you with an introduction to linguistics and a chance to focus on one or more languages.
German is a major language of business, diplomacy and tourism in the European Union and Eastern Europe. Immerse yourself in the German language and its rich culture. As you learn the language, you’ll also study German culture and society through a wide range of perspectives, including literature...
In this German course for beginners, a communicative learning approach is emphasized. The essential language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - will be developed simultaneously.
On top of that, you’ll find that there are many German and English words that are very similar due to the fact that both languages are partly derived from the ancient Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family, so learning German vocabulary will be much easier than you think.
