Are you considering a career in hairdressing? Our hairdressing level 2 apprenticeship will teach you the fundamental skills to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for both ladies and men.
Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men. Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types, ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair.
They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.
Entry requirements
A minimum of maths and English GCSE grade 3/D or equivalent or the ability to achieve a Level 1 functional skill.
You must achieve Level 2 English and maths prior to taking the final assessment.
Learners with an EHCP will be reviewed on an individual basis
Work Experience
The apprenticeship is work experience based, so this will depend on the employment contract you agree to.
Modules
You’ll study mandatory core skills and knowledge for hairdressing and barbering. Depending on the apprenticeship route chosen, you’ll do the following modules.
Route 1 – Hairdressing
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
You’ll also have the chance to learn about perming hair, hair relaxing treatments and techniques and hair extension services.
Route 2 – Barbering
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Cutting hair using barbering, techniques to create a variety of looks
Style and finish men’s hair
Cut facial hair into shape
Shaving services
You’ll also learn about the types of blades available, lathering products, the structure and function of the skin, the scalp and facial skin disorders commonly affecting men, lathering and the function it performs on the skin, in-growing hairs, and the effect of heat on the hair and skin, as well as the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
Assessment
Once you’ve passed the on-programme assessment and all units, and come to an agreement with your training provider and employer that you’re ready, you’ll be put forward for the end-point assessment.
This takes place in an agreed-upon location and is assessed by an Independent Assessment Examiner appointed by the Registered Apprentice Assessment.
N.B. 20% of the training must be off the job training – details of the elements included in the 20% off the job training are available on request.
Career and Progression
Once you’ve completed this apprenticeship, you will be eligible for State Registration with the Hair Council.
As an apprentice, you’ll be able to pursue a career as a hairstylist or barber following the completion of your apprenticeship.

This Classic Bridal hair up course will focus on traditional and classic bridal hairstyles. You will learn 4 key bridal styles including, rolls, knots, buns and the application of hair ornamentation that will capture the magic of every bride’s fairy-tale dreams.
Nothing is missing from 5 Day Hair-MakeUp Course: all hairstyles, from curls to pleats and chignons, and all makeup, from natural to full glam and Asian bridal. Our IMA qualified teachers will walk you through all of it, making sure you know not only how to create the perfect look.
This programme offers an introduction to the hairdressing industry and the basic skills needed to assist in a salon. During your time at college you will have the opportunity to work in our modern, well equipped, hairdressing salons learning the skills needed for the Level 1 qualification.
Example timetable, Students will attend 2 days per week to work towards their VTCT qualification, 1-2 days at a salon placement that ALD will help find and also on a Friday at our hub in Birtley to work towards maths, English, IAG and enrichment.
